Meet The Blind October

Join Us for October Disability Month Meet The Blind

October is National Disability Month, with a special focus on Meet the Blind.  Due to the rarity of blindness and visual impairment, resources are pretty scarce.  There is a national shortage for Orientation and Mobility Instructors or Teachers of the Visually Impaired. Many blind and visually impaired children and adults do without these needed resources.

Every day of October I will be sharing about the difficulties faced to increase awareness and raise funds for charity.  The donations will be going to The National Organization Of Albinism & Hypopigmentation (NOAH). Dwellings has offered to host our event and is even giving a generous 10% of the days sales for October 30th.  We have a public event on fb to make directions and information easy for you, I hope you will join us.

NOAH offers a number of programs for families, including free membership and a welcome kit for the newly diagnosed and their families.  The early days were terrifying for my family waiting for the diagnosis. NOAH helped us when no medical professionals in our area could.  When we felt lost and overwhelmed NOAH was there.

Help us kick off October with some awesome gear. We now have a shop at Cafepress. You can find us at Truly Capable Shop.  There are currently two styles of Love Is Blind available from babies to plus size. You can even get an awesome bag.

I hope with these daily posts of advocacy and awareness we can make the world brighter and a more welcoming place.  I deeply appreciate the support from friends, family, and you in this endeavor.  It is terrifying, overwhelming, and absolutely joyful to endeavor to do these important topics justice.  I am committed and hope you will join me.

You will be able to find all these topics under #awareness.  If you have a blog and would like to join me in raising awareness please let me know.  I would be glad to share your posts.  Thank you.

October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  This touches close to home as our family has had some very close scares and I hope to do this justice.  I hope to spread education and awareness about health and what is known about cancer.  I will primarily be focusing on clean eating and the known dangers in your daily diet. Let’s raise our voices and awareness this month!

  1. Great article. I was at a conference this past summer and helped a visually challenged person navigate the hallways on a few occasions. It was very interesting to me to learn her perspective. We went from a meeting room up an elevator, through a large youth room, down another elevator and into a chapel. After we were there a while she leaned over and asked, “Could you tell me what the room looks like?” I told her about the stone arches and stained glass windows and carved wood. On the way back to the conference room I explained all of the rooms. She was very grateful. Getting safely from point A to Point B is only part of the journey.
